Today on Facebook this post was shared by a friend:
My daughter was at the Wareham Cumberlands yesterday getting gas. A man started talking to her and wouldn't stop. When she turned around to get in her car he ACTUALLY RAN HIS FINGER DOWN HER BACK! She turned around to sit in her car and tried to shut the door but he put his hand on the door and wouldn't let her shut it. He was looking in her car. He kept talking and my daughter looked up and locked eyes with another man in a truck and he mouthed "Are you okay?" And she shook her head. He came over and asked her if she got her gas and was all set and the creep was STILL trying to make conversation with her. The creep eventually realized that the man wasn't going away until he did and he turned to walk away and said nice to meet you. She is reporting it to the police and the store management. If anyone has had this happen to them or someone they know please report it!! If anyone has heard anybody telling this story and he stepped in and saved my daughter, please tell me who it is because I need to thank him.
Reading this really pissed me off! I was pissed at the scumbag who was basically assaulting this young girl, but I was also pissed that this young girl had never been taught to MAKE A SCENE. There is so much crap that is taught to our children in school, but not this. I am so thankful that she was smart enough to ask for help from a bystander, but I would really like to impart the importance of knowing this SIMPLE SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUE.
MAKE A SCENE is a SIMPLE self defense technique that should be taught as part of every school's curriculum. Attract attention and let someone know that something is wrong. Take away the attackers power, take away the element of surprise. MAKE A SCENE AND MAKE THE ATTACKER GO AWAY!
Obnoxious I know, but it got your attention. And that's what MAKE A SCENE is all about, getting someone's attention.
MAKE A SCENE:
Now teach your daughters and your sons and your mothers and sisters and aunts and cousins and anyone who means anything to you this SIMPLE SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUE!
Look around, right now. What do you see? What are you looking at that that could potentially be a weapon? If someone surprised you, what could you use to give yourself the edge to get away?
In the picture below, there is a pot on the stove. Whatever is in it could be used to distract an attacker. Pick it up and throw it in their face! Obviously, if your back was to them and they grabbed you from behind, you would have to disable them by head butting them in the nose/face or kicking the in the shin, and then grabbing the pot and throwing it in their face. You could smash them in the head or face with the lid. Both of these will make an attacker grab for their face or at least hesitate, giving you the edge to GET AWAY!
There are utensils that you can grab and hit the in the nose, eye or ear with. NOT THE ARMS OR CHEST like you'll sometimes see in the movies, but in one of the Vital Spots.
STICKS AND STONES CAN BREAK MY BONES!!!!!
A full key chain is a dangerous, lovely weapon. Add a lanyard and you give yourself even more of an edge. A lot of times in class, when I bring up keys people always show me the hold the key between the pointer and middle finger and "jab" with it. This actually can put make you more vulnerable as you need to be within close proximity to hit an attacker. With a full set of keys attached to a lanyard, you add an additional 6" to the length of your arm, making it nearly impossible for an attacker to grab you. Swing that set of keys at someone and hit them across the bridge of their nose, the cheek or between the eyes and down they will go!
Baseball bats, lamps, piggy banks, trophy, pots and pans. Always AIM FOR THE VITAL SPOTS (see previous post).
Walk around and practice the 10 second rule. Notice not only how to get away, but what could you use as a weapon and how!
Last week we reviewed the Vital Spots. In this post, we are going to learn how NOT TO BE A VICTIM! In Simple Self Defense our primary goal is to GET AWAY! We have multiple "weapons" available to us to help us achieve that goal.
The lady above is biting the attackers arm. The woman below is kicking the attacker in the face.
We've talked about the 10 second rule and about being prepared, having a plan. So this week, start thinking about weapons.
One of the biggest reasons I started teaching self defense is because I could not find a simple self defense class out there. I didn't have the time that was required for traditional classes. I'm not going to be able to "take down" an attacker by kicking his ass, but I am going to be able to distract the attacker long enough to get away.
We all have vital spots, spots that for one reason or another are more susceptible than other spots.
If someone is grabbing you, trying to trap you or choke you, most probably they have both their hands on you or their intention is to grab you. You have TWO FREE HANDS, TWO ELBOWS, A HEAD, TWO KNEES, TWO FEET, AND TEETH. Use them as weapons. In the movies, you always see victims flailing their arms about, trying to grab away the hands of the attacker or punching them on the side of their arms or their chest. Go for the vital spots to disable an attacker and GET AWAY!
Practice and memorize these vital spots. Practice them on/with a friend or a spouse until they become instinctive. Have them come at you from the front and from behind. And practice GETTING AWAY!
